Or maybe it’s because those researchers don’t actually have access. Universities are always trying to save money by canceling journal subscriptions, so academics often have to rely on bootleg copies. Either way, SciHub seems to be our modern-day version of those Soviet secret gardens: for-profit publishing only “works” because people find ways to circumvent it.
